GB head coach Murray Treseder said, “The BT Paralympic World Cup is always a great tournament for us to compete in, having some of the best teams from around the world to play against in our home country is always a good experience for the men.
“We have selected the best team possible from the UK. We are pleased to welcome back Dan Highcock and Ade Orogbemi to the squad who will bring aggression and drive to the team, something that we missed in Turkey last year at the European Championships. With the World Championships in Britain this year and then on to 2012, this event is more and more important.”
The confirmed men’s GB is: Joe Bestwick (Nottingham), Simon Brown (London), Terry Bywater (Middlesbrough), John Hall (Derbyshire), Kevin Hayes (Rotherham), Dan Highcock (Liverpool), Abdi Jama (Liverpool), Simon Munn (Staffordshire), Ade Orogbemi (Liverpool), Jon Pollock (Wigan), Ian Sagar (South Yorkshire) and Matt Sealy (Maidenhead). Peter Finbow, Matt Byrne, Harry Brown and Gaz Choudhry are reserves for the team.
Terry Bywater, a key player for GB who was part of the bronze medal winning team in Beijing, said, “As always we are hoping to reach the final and show to our home supporters that we are a world class team. This year it will be very difficult to achieve as there is such strong opposition but it means the competition will be one of the best and most competitive in the event’s history.”
Bywater, who also plays in the European league for Fundosa in Spain, continued, “The BT Paralympic World Cup will be a great opportunity for the team to prepare for the World Championships. The event is run professionally and smoothly and helps us to prepare and get used to being a team playing in our home country with home support. This year will be particularly special for me as my baby boy of nine months, Benjamin, will be coming along to support me and these moments are very special and won’t be forgotten.”
The BT Paralympic World Cup is the world’s largest annual multi-sport elite disability event and major international stars and a strong British contingent are expected.
The competition will be staged in Manchester from 25-31 May, with over 400 competitors from over 31 countries scheduled to compete.
For the first time this year, a team challenge has been introduced which sees Great Britain take on teams from the Americas, Europe and the Rest of the World, with athletes competing for the overall BT Paralympic World Cup trophy.
Athletes will compete in four sports at world class competition venues in Manchester: Athletics, Wheelchair Basketball, Football 7-a-side at the Manchester Regional Arena and Swimming at the Manchester Aquatics Centre.
